Back in Sunnydale, Wesley was a by-the-books Watcher sent from the Council of Watchers to guide and train the two Slayers: Buffy Summers and Faith. Unfortunately, Faith's alliance with the forces of evil and Buffy's subsequent resignation from the Council's charge were both blamed on Wesley and he was fired. Wesley's forced departure from the Council led him to question his actions in terms of right or wrong, instead of just doing things as he was trained or told to do.
Wesley came to L.A. clad in full leather, riding a motorcycle. No longer part of the Council of Watchers and unable to go home to his native England due to financial difficulties, he appointed himself as a "Rogue Demon Hunter." He met Angel while in pursuit of a demon. Angel gave Wesley a job because the "Rogue Demon Hunter" was eating Cordelia's party snacks for dinner and drinking her coffee for breakfast! Wesley became a permanent part of Angel Investigations and earned his keep by being the resident researcher of all things demonic, and a useful part-time sidekick. Battling more evil and doing more good alongside Angel than he ever did for the Council of Watchers, Wesley's trust in Angel grew. He helped Angel fight against demons, and has even saved him a few times. He could translate ancient languages and hold his own in a duel of sarcasm with Cordelia, whose mutual attraction for one another during their days in Sunnydale had grown into a close, platonic friendship. In the aftermath of being fired by Angel, Wesley became the de facto leader of Angel Investigations, leading Cordelia and Charles Gunn into battle against the forces of darkness. When Angel made amends with them, Wesley remained in command, rising to the occasion as a competent and capable leader. However, Wesley quickly became the most tragic member of the family. The trust and love he built with everyone was shattered when he stole Angel's son Connor because he believed a false prophecy that Angel was going to kill him. This resulted in Connor being taken into a hell dimension and Wesley getting his throat slit. After a failed attempt on his life by Angel, Wesley entered a period of depression, he began to sleep with Lilah and stayed away from the group, reemerging only to offer his assistance when it was absolutely needed, such as finding Angel on the bottom of the ocean. When the Beast began to rain hell on Los Angeles, Wesley reluctantly rejoined the team, slowly rebuilding his friendships. Proving to be an integral figure in getting rid of the Beast and Jasmine, Wesley was back for good and went with everyone to Wolfram & Hart where he had more resources than he could ever imagine. Now both a successful fighter and researcher, Wesley was a powerful force in the team. Despite a traumatic experience with a robot imitating his father, things finally seemed to be going right for Wesley as Fred noticed and returned his affections. However, Fred's death and the emergence of Illyria threw him into another depression that often mirrored insanity. Choosing to help Illyria adjust to the human world, Wesley fought back his pain every time he laid eyes on her, especially when Illyira revealed that she was able to imitate Fred's appearance. His pain never ending, Wesley was also the only member of the team to regain his memories when he shattered the Olan Window, forcing him to again remember ugly past. In the final mission against the Circle of the Black Thorn, Wesley was charged with taking out Cyvus Vail who believe Wesley was ready to turn on Angel. Not able to compete against Vail's sorcery, Wesley was stabbed in the stomach and mortally wounded. Allowing Illyria to assume Fred's visage, Wesley died in her arms, at last finding some semblance of peace. Alexis Denisof (Wesley)
