Lorne, also known as The Host, first appeared in the Teaser of Season Two's opening episode "Judgement." He was the demon owner of the demon/human Karaoke bar and sanctuary called Caritas. His lavish singing and flamboyant mannerisms complemented his extravagant persona. Termed an Anagogic demon, initially his powers were vaguely described as being able to read people's auras while they sang. He would then consult the client like a demon psychologist setting them on their anointed paths.
However, the final episodes of Season Two shed light on his background. His full name was Krevlorneswath (nicknamed Lorne) of the Deathwok Clan. He was from a different dimension on the rural, primitive world of Pylea. Lorne's pacifistic nature, desiring to use his gift to help people rather than track prey, and his unique ability to hear and sing music set him apart from his combative based world.
One day Lorne randomly stumbled upon a dimensional portal opened from LA by Fred and wound up in Los Angeles. After giving Angel numerous hints and insights, Lorne became a full-fledged member of the squad. He reluctantly followed the crew through their dangerous tasks, offering his unique opinions, or a song, all the way to Wolfram & Hart where he became head of the entertainment division.
Like everyone else, Lorne had troubles at Wolfram & Hart. Engrossed with his work, he went so far as to have his sleep removed, which caused a physical manifestation of an angry, massive, alter-ego, as well as causing people to actually do whatever Lorne suggested.
After Fred's death Lorne became very quiet and reserved, a far cry from what he once was. He agreed to play a part in the final mission versus the Circle of the Black Thorn, but desired to disappear afterwards. Once Lindsey and him finished off the Sahvrin, Lorne revealed that Lindsey would never be a part of the solution and shot him in the chest. Completely disillusioned, Lorne walked away from the massacre to an uncertain future.
Andy Hallett (Lorne, The Host)
Andrew
Alcott Hallett was born on August 4th, 1975 on the small Cape Cod town
of Osterville. He attended Barnstable High School and then majored in
Business with an emphasis on Management Marketing at Assumption College
in Worcester. Despite his characters outgoing persona, Andy was very
shy and never sang until Patti LaBelle invited him onstage at a concert
at Harborlights in Boston. Patti's praise boosted his confidence and
Andy decided to sing more often.
After moving to Los Angeles, Andy held numerous jobs such
as a property manager, personal assistant, and a runner for The Radmin
Agency. He even landed a few non-speaking roles in a couple of commercials.
Then Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, saw Andy sing
in a Universal City Blues revue called BB King's and conceived the part
of the Host. Months later Joss approached Andy in an airport and offered
him his first big time acting position as the Host on ANGEL. Ironically,
his agent did not sign him until after his first episode "Judgement".
Andy starred in numerous episodes throughout Season Two of ANGEL and
is slated to continue to dazzle viewers in the future.
