The Pittsburgh Public Theatre
April 25 - May 26, 2002

drama that's as robust, emotional and gritty as the era that informs it. Crowded together in a cramped Bronx tenement and laid low by the Great Depression, this moving portrait of a Jewish immigrant family is an American classic. This country's most gifted social protest writer is at the top of his game, exposing a struggling family's pain and hypocrisy, tempered with the hope and promise of a brighter future.

The Pittsburgh Public Theater is proud to announce its production of – Clifford Odets’ masterpiece Awake and Sing! – which will be the only professional staging of this play in the United States this year. A moving drama of life in the Great Depression, infused with vitality and gritty lyricism, this play compassionately portrays the struggles and rebellions of a financially desperate Jewish family in the Bronx of 1935. Awake and Sing! is being directed by Elina de Santos and began previews on Thursday, April 25, with its successful opening night on Friday, May 3.

“Clifford Odets is an iconic figure in the history of American theater,” said PPT Artistic Director Ted Pappas. “Through his productions with the legendary Group Theatre, Odets revolutionized Broadway with the socially relevant content of his plays – the greatest of which is Awake and Sing! I’m so excited about bringing this brilliant playwright’s work to the Public.”
