STARFURY Bad Girls ~ Part II
Featuring Mercedes McNab and Elizabeth Anne Allen

n the second weekend of November, members of the CoA Staff along with several Citizens joined a few hundred other fellow-Buffy/Angel fans to converge on the little village of Longford outside of London for the three-day Starfury Bad Girls Convention, held at the very nice Heathrow Thistle Hotel. The Special Guests for the weekend were none other than the Bad Girls themselves, Julie Benz (Darla), Clare Kramer (Glory), Mercedes McNab (Harmony), and Elizabeth Ann Allen (Amy). Along with the assistance and gracious consideration of Sean Harry, Starfury coordinator of the event, and Titan Magazine, we are able to bring you a Special 2-Part Feature to cover this event to its fullest. In Part One, we focused on Friday evening and the opening Ceremony, up until Saturday morning and incorporating two of the actress's question and answer panels featuring Julie and Clare. In Part Two, we now follow up with Saturday night's events to Sunday morning and the question and answer panels of Mercedes and Elizabeth and finish off with the Closing Ceremony. So, let the party continue!.

Saturday Evening

The Dancing Council as Linda Thrills the fans!

The highlight of Saturday evening was the Fancy Dress Party (a.k.a. Costume Party) being judged by all the VIP guests. Somebody forgot to explain to our American guest that 'fancy dress' in the UK doesn't mean 'dressing up' in the sophisticated sense, as it does in the US, so Kristy was a tad confused until daylight dawned on us. Julie Benz was excited to see The Master and even Evil Willow gave Mercedes McNab a scare for her money, but our own personal favourites were the two girls who came to the Fancy Dress as Daphne and Thelma from Scooby Doo.

As luck would have it, you have been mercifully spared the sight of any of us dressed up as ghosts or ghoulies because we were trying to wake up Julie who was falling asleep at the table during dinner. This was due to having 2 hours sleep Friday night and spending the day trying to keep up with the motorised Kristy. However she did wake up later when the music started and Nic appeared wearing her 'Property of Angel's Dance Academy' T-shirt (which went down a storm!) So she was soon raring to get on the dance floor. Two bottles of coke and some serious foot tapping later, and she was awake and away. Kristy meanwhile, was much amused - and possibly a bit worried - about the dancing. However common sense and dignity soon abandoned her, and she joined in. A nice surprise was meeting up with Cardelia, who unsurprisingly, seemed very worried about the strange behaviour of the CoA staff, or more correctly; their dancing.

Q&A Highlights with Mercedes and Elizabeth

Mercedes McNab

The first thing you notice about Mercedes is that she is really beautiful, and the screen does not do her justice! She is also a little nervous as it is her first Convention, but this just adds to her charm! Like some of the other female actors she did originally audition for the part of Buffy. She of course got the part of Harmony which she originally thought would be a one time gig, both Joss and the audience were obviously taken with her character as here she is 5 years on, and still going strong!

Mercedes is overwhelmed by the wonderful audiance

Mercedes is very passionate about her acting and she reflects on her childhood, "Ever since I can remember it is always what I wanted to do. My parents thought I was crazy, I would literally stand in front of the sink washing the dishes as a small child, dishwashing along with the commercial, in front of the window, and watching my reflection doing the commercial!" She is not starry eyed about the profession though and says, "People can often confuse a passion for acting with just wanting to be famous and for me I have always known that that was more of a deterrent, because it makes me uncomfortable!" She adds, "It is important to work hard and it is not just about having a talent, the harder you work the more successful you will be!"

She describes working on Buffy as being part of a family and when asked whether she minds about the character of Harmony being brainless she says, "No she is so well written that at first, as an actor I read the script and Cordelia was more the really bitchy character and Harmony was written the same way, so I wanted to make Harmony more ditsy so that they were two different characters, one was really bitchy and the other kind of dumb and the follower!" After saying this though she also was pleased to read that her character was to turn into a vampire, if not a little surprised!, "Every script I would get I would read the last page first to find out if I was dead or not," and she recalls the moment she saw the end of the Graduation Day script and said, "Oh thank God I am not dead, I have been turned into a vampire!" thus reducing the audience to hysterical laughter.

The best part of this for her (apart from working with James Marsters - more on that later), is that she thinks her character has developed a lot since being turned into a vampire . In fact her favourite episode for her character is The Harsh Light of Day in which she first returns as a vampire, "Harmony was very one sided before then and that episode allowed the different facets of her character to come through!" There was of course the added bonus of being Spike's girlfriend and according to Mercedes, James is her favourite person to work with! In fact she smiles, "I just don't have a bad thing to say about James, I love him, he is so great!"
