The writers' imaginary creations of the breaking storylines for the new season of Buffy will involve the addition of a new character named Dawn. This has already sparked a lot of debate among fans in that it revolves around the roll of Buffy’s younger sister. "Ah yeah that one. Yeah! (laughter) What ‘is’ this about only-child Buffy getting a sister? It’s kind of weird. Yeah, I’m not going to tell you anything! I often say, all will be revealed and it will all make some semblance of sense." But Joss does reveal to us some of the reason why he wanted to create this character.
"Yeah, I'm not
going to tell
you anything!"
"I can tell you the reason we decided to add this character is that I wanted somebody who wasn’t at the exact same stage in life that all my other characters were. Who was younger, so we got a different perspective on everything they do and also somebody who happens to have a different relationship with Buffy we’ve never seen her have before. Which is sort of a squabbling sister, pretentious yet a very charged relationship that we haven’t seen in her life. I just wanted to see Buffy put in a different position and to stress something that isn’t this boyfriend stuff that might be a difference to her." Joss continues, "There’s just a lot of stories you can tell from an adolescence. She’s fourteen and it’s good to have somebody who’s still about to go through what they went through. It’s a fun perspective and the actress, Michelle Trachtenberg, who plays Dawn is wonderful, so I’m all excited about the same."

Finally, what else could possible be in store for the man on a mission, another series, a book perhaps? "Right now? No, no, Fray is the only area that’s taking up a lot of time and I’m all excited about that!

Joss had enough siggies
and smiles for all!

I am thinking about developing a movie because I’d like to make one quality X-Men so that’s something sort of in the future. But right now I’m doing two shows and a comic book and I’m a dead man." Well, the dead seem to do quite well in the company of Joss that is Whedon so we will encourage him to continue with that thing that he does so well! And with his final words for the day, "Thank you, I had a nice time." So came the applause, applause, applause!

After Joss departed the stage, the room moved out into the adjacent Fountain Area of the convention arena where he would return in half an hour to sign autographs for the hundreds of comic book and television series fans that stood in line. He was scheduled for a one-hour signing but remained (closer to two+ hours) to stay until all those who had stood in line walked away with their signed item, a photograph, a hand shake and/or question answered! And he did not rush through people at all. He was gracious, took his time, and asked for who he was signing for and to and made sure he looked at you. A very nice touch. The Dark Horse reps in charge were just as nice (not rushing) and limited the table to two people at a time to give Joss that little bit of personal space with each fan. DK gave Joss a custom CoA T-shirt and he was very generous to answer in depth as I asked if he thought the first season of Angel met with his expectations? "It was sort of touch and go," he began. "There were some spotty moments where I was sort of a little worried. The show was finding itself. Towards the end of the season it exceeded my expectations rather dramatically. I felt we really found our footing and the stuff got very moving to me, it really . . ." as he pondered over this a moment, Joss continued, "We found out what the show is and hopefully we’re bringing that into season two!" finishing with a smile and a raise of the eyebrows.

Following the signing, we headed back over to Dark Horse where Chris Golden and Tom Snieogsky were in the middle of their signing for their comic books fans. Eric Powell was also on hand to greet, meet and answer questions, although Chris was eagerly trying to get him in on the signing routine.

The new trading cards got lots of
attention at the Inkworks display.

I think Eric knew the better of it! (laugh) Of course, as with Joss, it wasn’t just comic book fans that stood in line to get their goodies signed! There were many Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans as well, with novels, the Sunnydale Yearbook and even a few of the just released Monster Book that both Chris and Tom had worked on.

A last look around and a few more hand shakes and hugs and we were done with this adventure! After Chris had finished up, we thanked him, Tom, Martha and Meloney for all that they had done! It was time to refresh and refuel as we returned back to our hotel. Oh, and don’t think we just sat around to a comfortable dinner and got to relax with a good in-room movie! There was just enough time for me run off to the business center and post our daily news in the Bronze and the CityofAngel Forum and a few quick e-mails . . . wait, I believe I did all this while DK got to go back to the room and relax! With dinner, so came the final fleshing out of the remaining CoA features needed before the new season started. "What! no desert? I am so ripped!" Sometimes I just don’t get the appropriate perks I’m looking for! Too late and too tired for a movie! We had to hit the hay so that DK and myself could make our perspective 6 and 7:00am flights back home the following morning! To which DK almost missed (those damn Starbuck’s Coffee demands)!

And there you have it! An exciting day, it was just a day right? We do it all for you guys, to bring you the best, latest and the most genuine news we can from the people that create it for you! As the G-man said, "It’s all Angel, all the time!" Because we can’t repeat what he really said! (laugh) "Richard, where’s the dog?"

The CityofAngel Council would like to thank Christopher Golden, Tom Snieogsky, Martha Modlin and Meloney Chadwick for being very gracious with their time and company. A special VIP Thank You to Joss Whedon for the opportunity to shake this amazing man’s hand.
